Believe it or not, Brits have been persuaded since the 1990s (by the likes of John Major) to think of themselves as a classless society too. The point is that this mythology of classlessness merely works to conceal the realities of inequality that structure US society - the kind that Katrina laid bare. It was not only the devastation of Katrina that was shocking but also the surprise for many that so many citizens were so very poor. "Who knew?" So, no, you are possibly right in thinking that an American might not have so many raw nerves about class and luxury; this, however, does not mean that the issues are any less germane.
